Volunteers Sought for Family Services

Share

Interface Children, Family Services seeks volunteers to help children struggling with problems and to support battered women and their kids.

The nonprofit agency is looking for people to work with kids who have trouble coping with school or family members or who have drug or alcohol problems. People who can relate to teenagers and who have a knack for communicating with them are needed, said Maureen Miller, coordinator of volunteer services.

“Good listening skills are probably the biggest requirement,” she said.

Volunteers will also assist battered women and their children with referral counseling, information about seeking residence in shelters and legal and medical services.

Volunteers will receive 40 hours of training, which will be completed by the end of March. Work begins in April and includes daytime and evening hours.

Last year, Interface provided 195,000 Ventura County residents with medical, legal, counseling and crisis assistance.

The agency encourages both male and female volunteers to go through the domestic-violence training, Miller said.

“We like to show [battered women] that men can be good role models,” she said.

Volunteers will go through a screening process before training begins.
