DARE Students Can Earn Scholarships
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program will offer two college scholarships each year to graduating seniors who stay clean and sober.
The program began this month in the Conejo Valley Unified School District after the DARE unit at the Thousand Oaks sheriff’s station received several donations from residents, said Sgt. Scott Zaslove.
Scholarship funds were also raised during several charity events hosted by DARE, including a golf tournament.
Each year, deputies who teach DARE classes in the district will select one sixth-grader and one eighth-grader who they consider to be role models on their campuses.
The students must participate in DARE activities and display a commitment to the DARE philosophy, which includes being free of drugs and gangs.
Upon graduation from high school, each candidate must enroll in college. At that time, the students will each receive $1,000.
