El Camino Real’s Hussey Has Game -- in Another Sport

Share

Contrary to rumors, boys’ soccer Coach David Hussey of El Camino Real High did not play for the New York Knicks.

Hussey was announced as a former Knick at the school’s teacher-student basketball game, and the gag escalated when he jokingly told students he signed a 10-day contract with the NBA team.

Hussey, who played basketball for North Hollywood, led the El Camino Real faculty to a 20-18 upset over the students, scoring a game-high five points that included banking in a three-point basket. Students yelled “Kobe” every time Hussey touched the ball.

“He looks so goofy [in soccer],” said Eric Choi, an El Camino Real soccer assistant. “It looks like he has two broken legs when he plays soccer. But when he steps on the basketball court, it’s a different story.

“I know none of the [soccer players] can beat him at basketball. The guy can hit fadeaways. He can dunk on people.”

Crescenta Valley midfielder Julie Herrold has 61 career assists, four shy of the school record set by Michelle Cinas in 1996.

Herrold, who has 68 career goals, might get the assist record today when the Falcons play at Pasadena. In the teams’ last meeting, Crescenta Valley won, 10-1.

“I know she’s going to break it,” Crescenta Valley Coach Bud Dain said of the record. “I try to get her to score more goals, but all she wants to do is pass the ball.”

Buena’s tie with Channel League boys’ champion Ventura on Tuesday earned the Bulldogs a one-game playoff with Santa Barbara at 3:15 p.m. Friday at Buena to decide third place.

Buena and Santa Barbara each finished with eight points, one behind second-place San Marcos and two behind Ventura.

“I’m sure they are not happy with coming down here to play us,” Buena Coach Sean Roche said.

“I’m sure they are fired up. It’s going to be an exciting game.”

Buena beat Santa Barbara, 3-0, in the first meeting, but Santa Barbara rallied from a 3-1 deficit to win the second meeting, 4-3.

If Buena loses, it will miss the playoffs for the first time since the late 1980s.

Harvard-Westlake defeated Flintridge-Sacred Heart, 4-0, on Monday, but Jessica Reyes, Flintridge-Sacred Heart’s top player, had to watch from the sideline because she forgot her cleats.

“We offered her cleats and she declined,” said Harvard-Westlake Coach Ned Smith. “She’s a great player. With her they are a different team.”
