A man who set a fire outside his Newport Beach home Sunday and threw pots and tools at police officers was taken into custody by a SWAT team.

The incident began when patrol officers were called to the 100 block of Onyx Avenue about 1 a.m. after neighbors reported the man was outside, creating a disturbance. Police ordered the 45-year-old man inside, but at about 2:50 a.m., he called police to say that his home was surrounded by gang members, police said.

Officers returned to find that he had cut himself with glass and a lawn tool. He began throwing objects outside the home and at officers, and broke a neighbor’s window, officials said. He also set a pile of blankets on fire outside his front door, police said.

A SWAT team was summoned, and negotiators tried to get the man to surrender. When he refused, officers entered the home and took him into custody.

He was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian for treatment and then to a psychiatric hospital for a 72-hour observation. Authorities said the man, whose name was not released, may face charges of assault with a deadly weapon.
