2nd City Committee Supports 7 Panels
A City Council panel on Monday endorsed the creation of seven area planning commissions to allow more localized decision-making, but provided that controversial projects, including child-care centers and convalescent homes, can still be appealed to the council.
The council’s Ad Hoc Committee on Charter Implementation was the second council panel to favor seven area commissions rather than the six recommended by the city Planning Commission.
Last week, the council’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee recommended that seven area planning commissions be created.
The new system would include two Valley commissions.
“This is a very, very good beginning,” Councilwoman Laura Chick said. “If it needs change as time goes on, that is what will happen.”
The panel rejected a proposal to require all public benefit projects that could be controversial to go to a citywide Planning Commission.
