A portion of the extra tax cigarette smokers pay will be funneled into a local hospital to promote better health for high-risk families.
The county chose Saddleback Memorial Medical Center as one of 13 hospitals to receive part of the $2.5 million in revenue raised by Proposition 10, the California Children and Families Act of 1998. The proposition, which was passed by voters in November 1998, established a tax on cigarettes to pay for early childhood health and development programs.
