City Council members took a stand in favor of plans for the proposed El Toro airport.

The council voted 3 to 1 Tuesday to oppose Measure F, the Safe and Healthy Communities Initiative. It also passed a city resolution in support of the use of the former Marine base as a “friendly commercial” airport similar to the operations at John Wayne Airport.

Councilwoman Barbara W. Kiley voted against both motions because she opposes any airport plans at El Toro.

Interim City Manager Daniel Miller recommended the council vote against Measure F because he felt the initiative was not clear and would hamper the county’s ability to establish air transportation, hazardous waste landfills and jails.
