Community organizations and low-income residents are invited to attend a kickoff event at 10 a.m. today for a new program providing free legal education for the west San Fernando Valley.

For the next six months, the West Valley Community Legal Education and Outreach campaign will offer a series of workshops on topics such as tenants’ rights, health care and domestic violence. Representatives from the Census Bureau and Internal Revenue Service will participate.

The campaign, a project of the legal aid organization Neighborhood Legal Services, is co-sponsored by Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick.

“It is my hope that with the success of this campaign, we can explore other ways to continue serving the legal needs of low-income communities in the West Valley,” Chick said in a statement.

The kickoff event, which will offer an overview of the workshops, will be at the Canoga Park Community Center, 7248 Owensmouth Ave.
