Head-On Car Crash Kills 4, Injures 2 in Santa Clarita

Four people were killed and two were injured Thursday night when an Acura Integra speeding down a Santa Clarita road hurtled across the center divider and smashed head-on into a Mustang, officials said.

Witnesses said the Acura, with five occupants, was traveling about 90 to 100 mph down a bicycle lane on Soledad Canyon Road near Sand Canyon Road, trying to pass a car on the right, according to Sgt. Steven Wilson of the Santa Clarita sheriff’s station.

Shortly after 8 p.m., the Acura swerved to the left, spun, crashed through the center divider and hit the oncoming Mustang, Wilson said.

The driver of the Mustang and three people in the Acura were killed instantly, authorities said.

Three of the dead were ejected, said county Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Crawford.

Wilson said the Acura was so badly mangled that authorities at the scene could not immediately identify the make or model.

As of late Thursday, authorities had not identified any of the dead. The two survivors, taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, were identified by a nursing supervisor as a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, both from Canyon Country and both in fair condition.

Investigators closed off a quarter-mile area around the crash site and were still investigating late Thursday.
