Titans Beat UNLV on Beck’s Hit in 10th

Chris Beck’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning helped Cal State Fullerton defeat Nevada Las Vegas, 2-1, in a nonconference game Friday at Fullerton.

Beck’s single scored David Bacani with the winning run.

Fullerton reliever Kirk Saarloos pitched two perfect innings with two strikeouts to earn the victory. Fullerton starter Adam Johnson pitched well, giving up seven hits and one earned run with one walk and 11 strikeouts in eight innings.

Steve Woodward had three hits and Aaron Rifkin drove in a run for Fullerton (3-5). Brad Maloff hit an RBI double in the top of the eighth to tie it, 1-1, for UNLV (3-8).

The teams continue their three-game series with games at Fullerton today and Sunday at 1 p.m.

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

UC Irvine 93, CS Fullerton 58--Megan Stafford had 16 points and seven assists for the host Anteaters (12-11, 5-6), who shot 65% from the field in the second half to break open the game.

Erin Whiteside had 18 points and 15 rebounds for Fullerton (2-20, 1-9).

In nonconference softball:

Vanguard 1-1, Claremont Mudd Scripps 0-2--In the first game, Gina Liebengood struck out nine and pitched a three-hitter for the Lions (5-4).

In the Big West Conference swimming and diving championships:

UC Irvine women in fifth place--After the second day of competition, the Anteaters have 141 points, four points behind fourth-place New Mexico State. Former University standout Sara Showalter had the best finish among the Irvine women, taking fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute 5.55 seconds) at Belmont Plaza Pool.

Crawford wins--Jon Crawford’s first-place finish in the one-meter diving finals wasn’t enough to pull the Irvine men out of last place with 140 points. Crawford had 467.50 points.

Competition concludes today.

In Big West Conference men’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, San Diego State 1--Ty Loomis had 26 kills and 10 digs for the Anteaters (5-7, 2-5), who won, 15-11, 13-15, 15-12, 17-16.
