Trepagnier Put on Probation

Pacific 10 Conference officials Monday formally reprimanded USC forward Jeff Trepagnier and Arizona State forwards Awvee Storey and Tanner Shell for their participation in a fight after the Sun Devils’ 93-81 victory Saturday at Tempe, Ariz.

In addition, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen put all three on probation for the rest of the season. If they are involved in any other altercations, they could be suspended.

After “talking with many people” and reviewing videotape, Hansen decided that Trepagnier, Storey and Shell were the major figures in the incident, which occurred near the Arizona State bench as the teams were shaking hands and preparing to leave the court.

He said he was unable to establish “beyond a doubt” who initiated the fight between Storey and Trepagnier. “Accordingly we are reprimanding both plus Shell,” who joined in the fight.

None of the players were injured in the skirmish. Storey and Trepagnier each fouled out before the game ended, and each received a technical foul during the game.

Hansen said he had watched the game at home on television Saturday night, but that coverage did not reveal what triggered the fight.

“As the kids were shaking hands, the [broadcast] put up a promotional ad,” Hansen said. “Then next thing I see [is] kids being wrestled up the tunnel. Then the TV switches to a tennis match.”

Although officials called 58 fouls on the two teams, USC Coach Henry Bibby said the game “got out of hand,” and was angry that Trepagnier was hit by elbows from Storey and Arizona State guard Eddie House. No fouls were called.
