The Santa Ana-based Orange County Human Relations Commission has taken a stand against Proposition 22. If approved by voters on March 7, the law would ban the recognition of same-sex marriages in California. There are efforts underway in Hawaii and Vermont to seek legal recognition of same-sex marriages. If approved in those states, federal law mandates that California would have to recognize those unions. Commission officials oppose the proposition on the grounds that it is unnecessary, potentially unconstitutional, would create a climate of oppression and may encourage hate crimes.
