Council Agrees With Skateboarders on Park Issue

Share

The City Council agreed to send a letter to the Stanton Park Neighborhood Assn. informing the association that it cannot restrict skateboarding on city streets. Several weeks ago the association banned skateboarding on city streets that run through Stanton Park, located off Cerritos Avenue between Beach Boulevard and Western Avenue.

The association claims that though the streets are city-owned, the association has jurisdiction because they run only through Stanton Park. However, residents of the neighborhood disagree. “The association doesn’t have the right to govern city streets,” said Tim May, an association board member who voted against the ban. His statements to the council were endorsed by about 20 skateboarders and their parents who appeared at the meeting, skateboards in hand. Supporters of the ban did not speak at the meeting.

The Community Services Commission will hold a meeting soliciting input from residents on ideas for a possible skateboard park on Feb. 28. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers, 7800 Katella Ave.
