Checklist: Your 2000 Taxes

Things to do this weekend with your money: Use technology to make sure your taxes are on track.

* Today: If you’re expecting a big tax refund this year--or a big tax bill--you should adjust your withholding to more accurately reflect your financial situation. Your company’s personnel office has the necessary forms. You can use interactive calculators at https://www.quicken.com or https://www.irs.ustreas.gov/prod/ind_info/webw4/index.html. If your tax situation is particularly complex, you may want to consult a professional tax preparer.

4 Saturday: Making big profits in the stock market or in a small business can have a downside: You’ll owe more taxes and you could owe underpayment penalties as well. Make sure you understand how estimated taxes work by reading a good tax book or Chapter 5 of IRS Publication 17, “Your Federal Income Tax,” available online at https://www.irs.gov.

*4 Sunday: Many tax preparation sites offer estimation calculators to help you project your 2000 tax bill. One of the better ones is on TurboTax’s Web site at https://www.turbotax.com.
