City officials Tuesday opted to begin negotiating with the Irvine Co. over the amount of parkland the developer must include with new housing.

They also debated ending the use of 1990 census figures when calculating the ratio of parkland to population in new developments. The decade-old figures undercount the number of people living in Irvine, city planners said. With more people now living in three- and four-bedroom houses, the city receives fewer park acres per home than it is due, they said.
