Yorba Linda Hopes to Strike Golfing Gold

Share

Construction on Black Gold in Yorba Linda is expected to start in May or early June with completion of the city’s first public course scheduled next spring or summer.

Earthmovers are rough-grading the site, a hilly, rugged property that bumps up against Chino Hills State Park. The land is being deeded to the city by Shell Oil Co., which is planning a 2,100-home development in the area. The city will build the course.

Black Gold, a par-72, 6,900-yard layout designed by Arthur Hills, will offer dramatic views, said Roy Stephenson, Yorba Linda’s city engineer.

“On one tee you can see Catalina and the Newport high-rise buildings,” Stephenson said. “We are trying to figure out if we will have the highest green or tee in the county. We have to have some claim to fame.”

It will be an upscale course, with greens fees in the $55 to $90 range.
