Blackhawks End Blues’ Streak With 4-1 Victory

The Chicago Blackhawks, the last-place team in the Western Conference, gave the first-place St. Louis Blues a reality check.

With a four-goal second period, the Blackhawks ended the Blues’ winning streak at six Sunday with a 4-1 victory at St. Louis.

The loss was just the second for St. Louis since Jan. 26. The Blues lead the league with 86 points.

“We were feeling pretty good about ourselves, but this should get our attention,” St. Louis Coach Joel Quenneville said. “This is a good correction.”

Steve Sullivan and Michael Nylander each had a goal and assist to lead Chicago. Alexei Zhamnov and Eric Daze also scored for the Blackhawks, and Jocelyn Thibault made 24 saves.

New Jersey 3, Montreal 0--Martin Brodeur had 30 saves for his 40th career shutout and the Devils ended their longest winless streak since 1995.

Petr Sykora and Claude Lemieux scored goals in a 2:28 span in the second period at East Rutherford, N.J., as the Devils broke a winless streak at five that included four consecutive losses.

Detroit 3, Tampa Bay 1--Larry Murphy moved into third place for games played and Pat Verbeek had two assists to go over 1,000 career points for the Red Wings.

Murphy played his 1,541st game, breaking a tie with Johnny Bucyk for third place on the NHL career list. Verbeek became the 57th player to reach 1,000 points when he assisted on Steve Yzerman’s goal 40 seconds into the game at Detroit.

Dallas 1, Colorado 1--At Dallas, the Stars denied Patrick Roy’s bid to match Jacques Plante’s 434 career victories, second on the career list behind Terry Sawchuk’s 447. Roy has a career record of 433-261-102.

Vancouver 2, Phoenix 1--The Canucks improved to 6-3-1 since the All-Star break with the victory at Vancouver, Canada, as Todd Bertuzzi scored for the third time in three games and Felix Potvin stopped 27 shots.
