Late Goal Gives Detroit 4-4 Tie

Brendan Shanahan scored off a rebound with 32 seconds left in the third period and the Detroit Red Wings tied the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-4, Friday night.

Detroit had just finished a power play when Shanahan took two jabs at a rebound at the edge of the crease and finally beat goalie Steve Passmore on Detroit’s 28th shot of the period.

Shanahan, who also had an assist, leads the Red Wings in scoring with 21 goals and 37 points.

Detroit pulled within a goal with 36 seconds left in the second period when Tomas Holmstrom took a pass from Sergei Fedorov and beat Passmore on the far side during a power play.

Chicago led, 3-1, after the first period and took a 4-1 lead on Eric Daze’s power-play goal at 10:58 of the second period, but Chris Chelios scored on a slap shot that beat Passmore low on the glove side 19 seconds later.
