Pool for the Elderly and the Disabled Is Reopened

A nonprofit swimming pool for the disabled and elderly reopened this week after being closed for more than a month.

More than 40 patrons picketed the California Pools of Hope in Long Beach last month to protest the fact that the pool closed for repairs.

Although the protesters have had disagreements with the current management running the pool, they expressed happiness at the fact it was reopened, offering the elderly and disabled free access to 92-degree water for swimming or water therapy.

“Thank God we were able to get enough money to reopen the pool,” said Robert Day.

Pool Director Pat Dixon said the facility is working with the city of Long Beach and other organizations to seek funding, but there is still a desperate need of donations and volunteers.

“We still need to do a complete renovation,” said Dixon, adding that the facility will soon need a new roof and new windows, as well as a paint job for the pool decks. The organization is also seeking a volunteer lifeguard.
