Public to Check Out New Library Plans

Share

A community forum will be held Tuesday to allow the public to view preliminary designs for the new Sun Valley Library.

The plan for the 12,500-square-foot facility includes reading areas for children, teens and adults, a Spanish collection room, a community meeting room and a multimedia computer area with electronic access to a variety of databases and the Internet.

There will also be an outdoor reading area and gallery exhibit space.

“Construction will start sometime this year and it will take about a year to complete,” said Peter Devereaux, one of the architects designing the library.

The existing library will be demolished and the new building constructed on the site, Devereaux said. During construction the library will function out of a bookmobile parked nearby.

Funding for the new library will come from Proposition DD, a $178.3-million bond measure approved by voters in November 1998 for citywide library upgrades.

Twelve San Fernando Valley libraries will benefit from the bond. In addition to Sun Valley, new buildings are scheduled in Sylmar, Pacoima, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Encino-Tarzana, Northridge and West Hills.

Branches due to be renovated or expanded are North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Valley Plaza and West Valley.

Tuesday’s forum will begin at 7 p.m. at the library, 7935 Vineland Ave.
