All These Bowl Matchups Were Right Up Their Alley

The bowl championship series pits two clubs from the weakest leagues, while the toughest conference (the Big Ten) goes 5-2 in the bowls and can’t crack the top three. The S in BCS stands for Scam, and, as always, the title is mythical.

New millennium, same scenario. Florida State plays one or two good teams each year, defends its criminal activities and struts upon the national stage. Nebraska plays even fewer good teams, loses one, gets lucky in another and whines that it is not given a national championship.

The Seminoles and Cornhuskers should be allowed to play every year for a mythical championship in the www.whiners.convict Bowl.

Those who were satisfied with the latest non-playoff method of determining the NCAA Division I football champion need not read further. However, for those who think computers and such are not a viable substitute for on-the-field competition, here’s the plan to show how silly the BCS really is from Day 1 next fall.

Brigham Young lost to undefeated Marshall in the Motor City Bowl. Marshall was snubbed by the BCS. BYU opens in the Pigskin Classic against undefeated and No. 1 Florida State in 2000. Best scenario: BYU thumps Florida State and the BCS gets to start spinning again.

Reading the Times sports section the morning after the Sugar Bowl, one would think Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick had passed for 329 yards and four touchdowns in a victory over Florida State. But actually, that’s what opposing quarterback Chris Weinke did. Instead Vick fumbled twice, the latter virtually giving the game to the Seminoles. He did show great speed and good running ability on broken plays and options. But the hype did not match the performance.

The Times’ coverage of the Fiesta Bowl was very much like ABC television’s: A little chat about Nebraska and Tennessee and loud hype about the Sugar Bowl. Diane Pucin’s commentary missed the point that Nebraska-Tennessee was a fast-paced, superbly played game by trying to make it into some kind of Nebraska grudge match against the people who decide bowl matchups. ABC spent the halftime doing what amounted to a 15-minute commercial for the Sugar Bowl with Terry and Bobby Bowden (or may I suggest LOUD-en?)

With Wisconsin’s victory over Stanford, the Big Ten has won seven of the last eight Rose Bowl games. Could it be that some Pac-10 fans, and even some sportswriters, have conveniently decided to lose count?
