Connecticut proved against Tennessee that it is tough as well as talented.

In a game marked by bumping, physical play, the top-ranked Huskies got a career-high 25 points from sophomore Sue Bird on Saturday and defeated the second-ranked Volunteers, 74-67, before a crowd of 20,789 at Knoxville, Tenn.

Connecticut (12-0) frustrated Tennessee (11-2) with sticky defense and made enough plays at the offensive end to survive its 27 fouls and 23 turnovers.

“We played with a lot of heart,” said Bird, a sophomore point guard whose previous best was 14 points. “Maybe it was not the best game we played, but we played with heart.”
