Having tried and tried again to convince voters to approve a parcel tax measure, the Irvine Unified School District is set to try once more. District trustees, who will meet Tuesday, are expected to vote to put the measure on the ballot, this time in April.

Faced with the grim task of cutting at least $4 million from the budget after voters narrowly rejected a flat $95 tax in November, trustees said that an overwhelming outcry from residents to save the district’s high-quality programs convinced them to give the tax a final shot.

Attempts failed in 1983 and 1991. Since the failed election two months ago, trustees have said that they will submit another measure only if a large number of residents support the campaign.

A new tax measure won’t keep the district from sending initial layoff notices to more than 200 teachers, Wakeham said. Of those, about 100 teachers are expected to lose their jobs. The board meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 5050 Barranca Parkway.
