INS Stakeout Disrupted as Agents Are Arrested
An Immigration and Naturalization Service stakeout near downtown was disrupted when two undercover agents were taken into custody by Los Angeles police officers, authorities said Thursday.
The federal agents were released at the scene after another INS official intervened, but one of the detained agents was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries he received during the encounter late Monday night.
It was unclear what led to the incident. An INS spokesman refused to elaborate beyond a two-paragraph statement, and LAPD officials declined to comment.
“We have been in contact with officials at the Los Angeles Police Department and intend to work closely with them to address this matter,” INS District Director Tom Schiltgen said in the statement.
“We enjoy an excellent working relationship with the LAPD and are committed to seeing that cooperation continue,” he said.
