This Film Won’t Win Any Awards

When the Lakers gathered Thursday at L.A. Southwest College for what turned out to be two hours of videotape study, it was not to review the entrants in the Sundance Film Festival.

It was to get a chance to see for themselves that their offensive execution has been wanting of late.

“Film doesn’t tell [lies],” Derek Fisher said after emerging from the darkness. “A lot of times it’s good for us to actually see what’s going on--or not going on--out there on the floor. A lot of times, coaches say things and you think they’re crazy. . . .

“Until you see it, you really don’t have a good feel for it.”

So what did they see?

“It seems as if we’re getting worse, as far as our execution of the triangle offense,” Fisher said. “We expect to not play well all the time, but we don’t expect to not execute and not attempt to do the right thing out there on the court.”

With the NBA’s best record and a recent 16-game winning streak, “we just started to reach a comfort level,” Fisher said. “And any time you get comfortable in this business, you’re liable to get knocked out of your seat. Now we’re kind of back on edge and everybody has their antennae up and they’re ready to try to figure out how to get this thing right again.”

Coach Phil Jackson called the film session, which was followed by only a few minutes on the court, “a quick look” at finding ways to make the team better.

His emphasis: “More or less, how we get a flow and a rhythm. That’s what we’ve been talking about, it seems like, for a couple weeks, but that was basically the essence.”

Kobe Bryant had 25 points and 13 rebounds in Wednesday’s 95-86 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he also had six turnovers and got an earful from Jackson during a timeout with 4:39 to play.

“He’s just doing his job, being a coach,” Bryant said. “No big deal whatsoever. I expect him to do that even more--hopefully not as often because hopefully there won’t be too many more mistakes, you know what I’m saying. But he’s just doing what he has to do.”
