La Canada is hoping All-Southern Section forward Courtney Adams can return to the lineup tonight for a Rio Hondo League showdown between 4-0 teams.

The Spartans (14-5) travel to San Marino to determine which team will take sole possession of first place.

Adams, who earlier this week injured a knee in practice, sat out La Canada’s 58-21 rout of Blair on Wednesday night.

Adams leads the Spartans in scoring, rebounding and free-throw shooting.

There was some good news, however.

Senior Shanell Ferguson, who started in Adams’ place Wednesday, had 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Not so fast, Antelope Valley.

Just when the Antelopes appeared to be taking control of the Golden League girls’ race, defending champion Palmdale stepped forward.

The Falcons (11-10, 2-2 in league play) upset No. 9 Antelope Valley (14-3, 3-1), 45-43, on Tuesday night.

“We finally played some good defense,” Coach George Corisis said. “It was about time.”

Crystal McCutcheon, the Antelopes’ leading scorer, managed only 11 points against Palmdale.

Coach Andy Gavel of Paraclete was philosophical on Wednesday night after a 76-73 nonleague boys’ loss to Milken Community in three overtimes.

“That’s why this game is better than soccer,” he said. “If this were soccer, we would have played an hour, everybody would have gone home and nobody would have won. In this game, everyone got their money’s worth.”

The Rebels made 16 of 19. St. Margaret’s connected on 20 of 21.
