Sheriff Wants to Relocate Crime Unit

Sheriff Bob Brooks wants to move a countywide crime task force to new quarters in the Camarillo Police Station.

The Crime Suppression Unit has been housed in sheriff’s offices in the County Government Center in Ventura.

But Brooks thinks the deputies can respond faster if they are in the county’s geographical center.

The move, for which Brooks will ask the Board of Supervisors for approval Tuesday, would also free up more space for sheriff’s detectives at the Ventura headquarters, officials said.

Deputies in the unit work with city police departments on special assignments, such as raiding the homes of suspected gang members or carrying out major drug busts.

The Camarillo City Council has approved $60,000 to partly offset the cost of the move.

Another $107,000 would come out of existing revenues in the West County Police Services budget.

Camarillo is remodeling a storage room at its police station to house the unit, which includes 12 deputies, two sergeants, one captain and an office assistant.
