UCLA Wins Its Sixth in a Row as Martin Sparks Big Second Half

Maylana Martin scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half as No. 12 UCLA defeated Arizona State, 76-55, on Saturday night at Tempe, Ariz., to extend its winning streak to six games.

Martin also had 12 rebounds to push her career total to 820, moving her past Sandra VanEmbricqs and Ann Meyers for fourth place on the school list.

Janae Hubbard added 13 points for the Bruins (11-4, 5-0 Pacific-10), and Marie Philman and Michelle Greco each had 10. Kristine Sand led the Sun Devils (11-5, 4-2) with 13 points.

The Bruins jumped out to a 25-8 lead, but Liz Paulson scored six points during a 13-0 run in the final 2:33 of the half as the Sun Devils rallied to cut UCLA’s lead to 35-33.

UCLA started the second half with a 20-5 run to open a 17-point lead at 55-38 on a layup by Martin.

Arizona State twice got within 10 points--the last time at 57-47 on a layup by Leah Combs with 8:17 to play. But the Sun Devils went the next 5:05 without a field goal, and Martin scored twice after offensive rebounds and once on a fallaway jumper during a 15-2 surge that sent the Bruins to a 67-49 lead with 4:42 to go.
