Warning signs were posted Wednesday on the beach near the Ventura Pier after as much as 100 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into a storm drain at Ash and Front streets.

According to city officials, up to 300 gallons was discharged when a blockage occurred before 8 a.m. in a main sewer line near the intersection.

About 100 gallons went into the storm drain and discharged onto the beach 200 yards east of the pier. No sewage discharged into the ocean, said county environmental health officials.

The signs warn people to avoid contact with the storm drain and the discharge site until 8 a.m. Saturday.

It was the second incident of its kind this month.

On Jan. 18, a sewer line that vandals had clogged with debris caused 5,500 gallons of raw effluent to flow into a storm drain that discharged into the ocean near Ventura Harbor.
