* Sarah Catz accuses Orange and Santa Ana of shortsightedness (Orange County Voices, Jan. 16). It is a shame that our tax-supported representatives are trying to design the “Center Line” to 1910-era technology and still call it “high-tech.”

The streetcars and the “elevated” were wonderful in their day, but they are gone--and for good reason. They cannot match the convenience of the private automobile or the flexibility of a bus.

New technologies, such as ultra-light rail and small dual-mode cars, can double the capacity of our now overcrowded freeway system, and provide the same door-to-door travel of the private automobile at a reasonable fare. Let’s not throw tax money after ancient systems.
