Golden Moment for Quartz Hill and Highland

Share

Maybe it should be renamed Quartz Thrill High.

The Quartz Hill boys’ basketball team, never really in the mood to put away a game early, has won three of its last four games with come-from-behind efforts in the fourth quarter.

Coach Bernard Nichter’s fingernails might be nibbled down to nothing--”every game’s a fight,” he said--but the Rebels (14-6, 4-1 in league play) are in position to challenge for a Golden League championship.

Quartz Hill hosts Littlerock (16-5, 5-0) on Friday, a rematch of a game won by Littlerock, 67-64, earlier this month.

“We’ve been waiting all year for this,” Nichter said. “We just can’t turn the ball over and let [Gene] Myvett go get dunks at the other end for easy points.”

Myvett, a senior guard, had a big game against Quartz Hill, scoring 31 points, 14 on fast breaks. He made two free throws with 12 seconds left to give the Lobos a three-point lead.

Quartz Hill made only 28 of 75 shots (37.3%) in the loss.

Said Nichter: “I think whoever gets the breaks will win the game.”

And get the upper hand in the title race.
