Opportunities for Volunteering

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art Docent Council needs volunteer guides. Participants should enjoy studying art, public speaking and working with kids. Bilingual docents are especially needed. An admissions committee interviews applicants, and volunteers must complete a one-year training course in art history and touring techniques. Penny Lane, a North Hills nonprofit group that helps abused and emotionally disturbed teenagers, needs mentors for troubled teens. Mentors must commit to at least one call or visit a week to their assigned teens, who have little or no close family or friends. Call (818) 892-3423, Ext. 217.

Volunteers are needed to teach English as a second language at MEND, a nonprofit Valley group at 13460 Van Nuys Blvd. in Pacoima. Participants may teach Monday through Thursdays, afternoons or evenings, at least once a week for six weeks. Call (818) 897-2443.

The Volunteer Center Assistance League of Southern California is seeking volunteers to do clerical work at the Independent Living Center, a social service agency in Van Nuys, and at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. Mulholland Middle School in Van Nuys is seeking tutors; the Guadalupe Community Center in Canoga Park needs mentors for low-income youth.

The Meals on Wheels program, which delivers foods to homebound people, needs drivers. Participants get reimbursed for their mileage expenses. Call Joan Kagan at (818) 908-5128.
