Bicyclist, 8, Dies After Being Hit by Car
An 8-year-old Simi Valley boy was killed after riding his bicycle in front of a car driven by a suspected drunk driver, police said Sunday.
Cameron Cheung was pedaling in the 2500 block of Morley Street around 8 p.m. Saturday when he rode into the street from behind a parked car, said Sgt. Arch Morgan of the Simi Valley Police Department.
A car driven by Pedro Zamora of Simi Valley struck the boy, who was riding without a helmet, police said.
Cameron suffered head and abdominal injuries from the collision and was pronounced dead at 8:22 p.m., according to Mitch Breese, senior deputy with the Ventura County coroner’s office.
Zamora was later arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence, Morgan said. Zamora left the scene and returned a short time later, he said.
“The law says that drivers are required to stop and render aid,” Morgan said. “The driver may not have been able to avoid the collision, but the fact that he was impaired could have affected the severity of that collision.”
