Oxnard Man Jailed in Market Burglary

An 18-year-old Oxnard man was in custody after an early-morning burglary Friday at the Somis Market and is being investigated in connection with a similar incident at the store in October.

Alfredo Martinez was arrested and booked at Ventura County Jail on suspicion of commercial burglary, said Senior Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Rhods. Camarillo station deputies responded to an alarm call at the market, 3319 Somis Road, about 1 a.m. Martinez allegedly entered the store through a hole in the roof, which was apparently made by breaking through a vent, Rhods said.

The store owner identified Martinez as a former employee who quit about a year ago.

Rhods said after the store was surrounded by deputies, Martinez hid the money--which he allegedly took after prying open cash register drawers--in the store.

Authorities later recovered $438 in cash and about $1,000 in change that had been collected for charity.

Three registers and a California Lottery machine were damaged, although no tickets were taken, Rhods said.

He said the October burglary was similar, including entry from a hole in the roof and the prying open of cash registers. About $5,000 was taken in that burglary.
