Zvereva Fined $1,000 for Gesture
All England Club officials were greeted Saturday by a huge picture in the Daily Mail of Natasha Zvereva raising the middle finger of both hands above her head, appearing to direct the obscene gesture at the crowd on Court 1.
The incident occurred Friday after Zvereva and her doubles partner, Anna Kournikova, lost to Venus and Serena Williams in the semifinals. It did not appear as though her act was directed at the sisters.
After an investigation by Wimbledon referee Alan Mills, Zvereva was fined $1,000. She could have been fined as much as $10,000.
