This 242-page book is about two quarterbacks, father and son, who happened to experience undefeated seasons. It happened for Bob Griese in 1972, when he led the Miami Dolphins to a 17-0 record and a Super Bowl championship. It happened for Brian Griese in 1997, when he led Michigan to an unbeaten season, a Rose Bowl victory and a national championship.

But this book is about more than football and winning and losing. It’s about the bond between a father and his youngest son, and about how they triumphed over a tragedy--the death of their wife and mother. Judi Griese died of breast cancer when Brian was 12. It was first diagnosed when Brian was 7, and after treatment Judi went into remission. But one day, without warning, the cancer came back.

On Mother’s Day in 1987, Brian gave his mother a card that read, “I love you, Mom. Keep this card because I’m going to be famous someday.” That was her last Mother’s Day card.

The format for the book has Bob and Brian speaking in the first person, sometimes bantering back and forth. The book opens with an in-depth look at the 1998 Rose Bowl game between Michigan and Washington State. While Brian was on the field leading the Wolverines to victory, Bob was up in the ABC booth, announcing the game with partner Keith Jackson.

Both talk about their emotions before and after the game. Bob went down to the locker room after Michigan’s victory. He looked for Brian for a few minutes, finally found him and the two embraced. When Bob pulled away, some eyeblack from Brian’s face smudged Bob’s cheek. Brian reached over and affectionately rubbed it off.

This book talks about other memories as well, as Bob discusses the great Don Shula-coached Dolphins and Brian, just beginning his NFL career with the Denver Broncos, inserts many of his thoughts along the way.
