Proposal for Seaside Amphitheater

* Re “Firm Tries to Sell State on Concert Shell by Seashore,” July 11.

Although I live about two miles from the speedway, the noise it produces can be easily heard in my neighborhood, and many of us find the hours of unmuffled motorized roaring every Saturday night quite offensive.

Perhaps 2,000 people attend the events, but there are probably many more than that who live within earshot of the venue and who derive no entertainment or economic benefit from it.

What is more, it is a sad fact that one of the most valuable pieces of oceanfront real estate in the city of Ventura (which in many other communities would probably be a public park to benefit all residents) is only looked upon in terms of how much revenue it can generate.

I hope that any decision that the Seaside Park Board of Directors makes regarding the future of the speedway will be open to public commentary from the citizens of Ventura who would be impacted by it. If you choose to preserve it as a community asset, let everyone have a say as to whether they too regard it as one, since the land that it is set upon belongs to the people of California.
