City officials decided this week to prepare plans to rehabilitate the Newport and Balboa piers. The city has funds from the American Trader oil spill settlement to improve the city’s oceanfront facilities. Ten projects to be funded by the settlement have been approved, and rehabilitation of the 60-year-old piers is the priority. Deteriorated piles, timbers, concrete decks, signage and other crumbling parts of the piers will be replaced.

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously voted to hire consultants to draft the plans.
