Residents Can Meet the Police at Awareness and Safety Day

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Twice a year, residents have a chance to get up close and personal with members of the police force and other safety workers.

The Public Awareness and Safety Day at Sigler Park on July 27 is an opportunity to tour the Police Department’s mobile command center, see members of the SWAT team, and have questions answered by police and fire officials. And it’s a way to meet on friendly terms, a spokesman for the Westminster Police Department said.

Awareness and Safety Day is one of two annual city events for the police to showcase their equipment and “give citizens a chance to talk to officers without there being an unpleasant activity,” Police Service Officer Ken Edwards said. The other event is the Police Department’s open house, which is earlier in the year.

The event, sponsored by the Community Services and Recreation Department, enables officers to hear residents’ concerns, many regarding personal and home security, Edwards said.

Other participants include the Westminster Explorer Scouts, who will help with children’s fingerprinting and bicycle registration. Also, a bicycle safety testing unit will be provided by the Automobile Club of Southern California.

A bicycle rodeo is planned for children, and police and fire vehicles will be on display. Sigler Park is at 7200 Plaza St. Information: (714) 895-2860.
