CSU Committee OKs Development Plan
A California State University committee approved a blueprint for development at Ventura County’s emerging public university Tuesday, a master plan to guide creation of a range of income-generating ventures designed to expand the campus over the next 25 years.
The CSU’s committee on campus planning, buildings and grounds signed off on the plan to build a self-contained community at the Camarillo campus--a proposed mini-city of 900 houses anchored by a town square and including bicycle paths, parks and pools.
The plan goes to the full CSU governing board today for what is expected to be routine approval.
CSU officials say the development projects are designed to generate the millions of dollars needed to create academic space for as many as 15,000 students eventually expected to attend Cal State Channel Islands.
The Camarillo campus--which opened last fall as a branch of Cal State Northridge--is scheduled to evolve into a free-standing independent, degree-granting institution by fall 2002.
“It’s another important step out of many in the development of the campus,” CSU spokesman Ken Swisher said.
