White, Titans Still Pursuing Deal

Reggie White is staying home and the Tennessee Titans are keeping their checkbook closed.

A gap of about $500,000 between the Titans and the NFL’s career sack leader is too wide to coax him out of retirement, Tennessee Coach Jeff Fisher said.

“There’s a lot of work to be done and the biggest hurdle is to at least get into the same range of numbers that would work for both sides,” Fisher said in a story in The Tennessean on Tuesday.

Jimmy Sexton, White’s agent, had no comment.

The NFL is expected to fine the Denver Broncos for failing to pay about $22 million in deferred compensation to John Elway and Terrell Davis.

However, the league is not investigating complaints by Oakland Raider owner Al Davis that the Broncos were trying to circumvent the salary cap.

Dolphin cornerback Patrick Surtain was arrested and charged with speeding and drunken driving in Miami after allegedly going 65 mph in a 40-mph zone and weaving between lanes in his Ford Excursion.

Surtain refused a blood-alcohol test and failed a roadside examination, police said.

In other news, Dolphin offensive line coach Paul Boudreau, 50, will undergo surgery next week to remove a cancerous tumor from his kidney.

A proposed agreement on how to market naming rights for Lambeau Field was passed by the Green Bay, Wis., City Council, clearing the way for scheduling a referendum on a sales tax to help pay for renovating the Green Bay Packers’ stadium. . . . Offensive tackle Erik Williams was a no-show for the opening of the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp, and team owner Jerry Jones indicated Williams’ absence was not a surprise to the team and gave no details. . . . The Chicago Bears agreed to a contract with free-agent quarterback Shane Matthews. . . . Defensive end John Frank, Philadelphia’s sixth-round draft pick out of Utah, retired even before his NFL career started, forfeiting a signing bonus of about $63,000. . . .
