Construction Worker Killed in Santa Clarita Valley
A construction worker was killed Thursday after being run over by a grading machine at a Santa Clarita Valley housing development, authorities said.
The 36-year-old Palmdale man suffered head, leg and abdominal injuries when he was hit at 7:45 a.m., said Inspector Ed Martinez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. He was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
County sheriff’s deputies and the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident, which happened at a 279-home development under construction on Pico Canyon Road, west of Stevenson Ranch Parkway.
“At this point we’re labeling it an industrial accident,” said Lt. Mike Dunkle of the Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita station.
The site is being developed by Irvine-based John Laing Homes, but the victim worked for a construction subcontractor, Dennis McCoy & Sons Inc. of Westlake Village, Cal/OSHA spokesman Dean Fryer said.
The firm had no previous history of safety violations, Fryer said.
Lowell Ledgerwood, a controller for McCoy & Sons, declined to comment on the death.
