Coast Guard Rescues 6 After Boat Mishap
The U.S. Coast Guard rescued six people from Santa Cruz Island on Saturday after a 23-foot pleasure boat ran aground on the island’s eastern edge, authorities said.
The victims, who were not identified, waded in shallow water from the boat to shore, where one of them used a cellular telephone to call authorities shortly before 2 p.m., Coast Guard officials said.
A Coast Guard helicopter transported the victims to a dock on the island where a 41-foot Coast Guard boat was scheduled to pick them up, authorities said.
No one was injured. There was no immediate cause for the boat running aground, authorities said.
This is the second time in a week that a party of people has been rescued from one of the Channel Islands.
Last Sunday, 14 sightseers, including two infants, were stranded on Anacapa Island for more than five hours until the Coast Guard was notified and they were rescued.
No one was injured in that mishap. Authorities said the group of friends and family from Los Angeles was on a pleasure cruise in two private boats when engine trouble struck one of the vessels and both boats ran aground.
