Driver Burned Over 98% of Body Dies
A 31-year-old man, who was burned over almost all of his body when his car interior burst into flames, died Monday morning at Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital, authorities said.
William Major of North Hills went into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 11:06 a.m., said Larry Weinberg, a spokesman for the burn center.
Los Angeles Fire Department arson investigators were trying Monday to determine the cause of the fire, said Jim Wells, a Fire Department spokesman.
Major suffered third-degree burns over 98% of his body when his car caught fire at 11:30 a.m. Sunday near Balboa Boulevard and Superior Street in Northridge, authorities said.
Witnesses reported seeing Major, engulfed in flames, get out of a Chevrolet Camaro, authorities said. Bystanders covered him with blankets to douse the flames.
