Police Presence at Hells Angels Rally Draws Angry Protest

People protesting the strong police presence accompanying a Hells Angels rally staged a mini-riot early Sunday, spray painting police vehicles, blocking a busy downtown street and causing some property damage, authorities said.

Sixteen people were arrested.

Forty-seven others were arrested earlier in disturbances that began Friday night and continued Saturday night.

The special police task force numbers about 200. Helicopters also were being used to monitor the bikers, whose five-day gathering at nearby Marshall Mountain Ski Area was winding down Sunday.

Police said 140 protesters initially gathered at City Hall on Saturday night. The protesters left City Hall and headed into the downtown area, interfering with traffic.

Police handcuffed some of the protesters as the crowd grew to an estimated 500 people.
