LAUSD Search for Superintendent

Re “L.A. Unified Looks at Former Chicago Official,” May 27:

How many women, the educators of the world, have been interviewed for the position of school superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District? Have staff and current educators or retired ones, mainly female, been asked for suggestions? The “committee” seems to concentrate on warriors, politicians and others who represent our patriarchal society.

If the goal is to provide educational opportunities for our children, why not consider those who have been doing just that forever? I can name one at Palos Verdes High who creatively engages students every day. So very many know who the proven educators are and should be encouraged to nominate them.

I strongly disagree with your attitude when your May 23 editorial asks, “What strong school chief would be willing to take on a huge, troubled urban system just as the state appoints an outside monitor to look over his or her shoulder?” We need an effective leader who is driven by concern for 700,000 children rather than his or her ego. We need a superintendent who would not be afraid of working as a team player and knowing when to compromise and when not to. We need an experienced administrator who is confident enough to stand for needed reforms within the district and capable of nurturing and fighting for the many great things that go on every day.

You seem to accuse state Sen. Richard Polanco (D-Los Angeles) of politics. What about L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan? He raised $2 million from his friends to influence the last school board election.

Outside oversight is sometimes necessary. I hope the new superintendent will have the vision and the skills to guide the LAUSD, with or without a state monitor.
