A high-speed chase through two cities ended with a 33-year-old driver’s crashing through a locked gate onto the Belmont Pier in Long Beach and jumping into the water, authorities said.

Jack Audiss, of Long Beach, took off in his pickup truck during a traffic stop in Seal Beach shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, said Seal Beach Sgt. Jim Johnson.

Leading police on a 15-mile, 40-minute chase in and around Seal Beach, Audiss finally drove onto the Belmont Pier, crashing through a locked gate. As he reached the end of the pier, Audiss got out of his truck and jumped in the water, Johnson said.

Audiss gave up and swam to shore after officers got help from the Long Beach harbor patrol and a Long Beach Police Department helicopter.

He was taken into custody on suspicion of felony evading.
