The Orange County chapter of the American Planning Assn. gave an award of excellence in planning to the Orange County Gateway Rail Lowering Project, headed by Placentia.

The $300-million rail project is planned along the main line of the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe railroad, and passes through Placentia, Anaheim and Yorba Linda. The project would help reduce automobile pollution and traffic delays at 10 rail crossings by lowering the tracks below grade. The award was for the plan’s thoroughness and originality.

The trenching project is scheduled for completion in 2005 to 2007. So far, $82 million has been raised for the project.
