Q: I recently upgraded my Internet Explorer 5.0 to version 5.1 by downloading the upgrade from the Microsoft Web page. I installed the upgrade and IE is now faster, but it still shows version 5.0 on the opening screen. Have I done something wrong?

A: Microsoft is often less than informative about version numbers on product upgrades. Open IE and then click on Help. Now click on About Internet Explorer. The About Internet Explorer screen will reveal a version number that starts with 5.00. The numbers that follow show the version numbers:

Internet Explorer 5 5.00.2014.0216

Internet Explorer 5 (Office 2000) 5.00.2314.1003

Internet Explorer 5 (Win 98 2nd Edition) 5.00.2614.3500

Internet Explorer 5.1 5.00.2919.63067

Easy Way to E-Mail Outlook Notes

Q: I use Outlook 2000 and often I save information in the Notes section. Is there an easy way to transfer the contents of a note to e-mail or should I just resign myself to using copy and paste?

A: There is an easier way to send your note via e-mail. Open the Notes section of Outlook and then click on the note you wish to send. Right-click on the note and then select Forward. A new blank e-mail page opens with your note included as an attachment. The recipient need only double-click on the note to open it.

Change Default Settings to Redial

Q: When I try connecting to my Internet service provider I sometimes get a busy signal. Does Windows have a redial option?

A: Windows Dial-Up Networking (DUN) does have a redial feature, but it is disabled as a default setting. To turn on the redial feature double-click on My Computer and then on Dial-Up Networking. Click on the Connections button that appears under the blue Dial-Up Networking title bar. Select Settings and then click in the Redial box. You can now set the number of times DUN will redial that number. You can also set the amount of time, in minutes and seconds, between redial attempts.
