Five Angel minor league players will be in all-star games this week.

Three pitchers--Phil Wilson, Sean Brummett and Mario Mendoza--from the Class-A team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, will be with the West Division squad in the Midwest League all-star game at Geneva, Ill., Tuesday.

Wilson, the Angels’ third-round draft pick last year out of Poway High, is 4-2 with a 2.87 earned-run average in 13 starts. Wilson didn’t pitch last season because of a strained muscle in his throwing arm. However, he did well enough in the instructional league to be assigned to Cedar Rapids.

Brummett, a relief pitcher, is 3-2 with a 1.57 ERA in 26 appearances. He has five saves. Mendoza, added to the team this week as a replacement, is 6-4 with a 3.95 ERA and a team-leading 60 strikeouts. ...

Two players from Class-A Lake Elsinore, left fielder Gary Johnson and center fielder Elpidio Guzman, are on the California League all-star roster for its game Tuesday against the Carolina League in Kinston, N.C.

Johnson is batting .340 and leads the team with 12 home runs and 59 runs batted in through 66 games. Johnson, who played at Brigham Young, was drafted in the 19th round in 1999.

Baseball America ranked Guzman as one of the Angels’ top prospects this season. Acquired as a minor league free agent out of Santo Domingo in 1995, Guzman is batting .289 with 38 RBIs.
